E-Drive
BEB Hub Motor

Although mid drive motors dominate the adult e-bike market, we believe that when it comes to smaller rides, the rear hub motor is clearly the better choice for a number of reasons:

  • Weighing less than 2.1 kg, the hub motor is lighter than any mid drive motor and also replaces the freewheel crank, reducing the weight increase compared to an equivalent non e-powered bike to around 1.7 kg.

  • More than enough torque to support your trainee rider, even on the steepest of climbs!

  • In contrast to the mid drive, the hub motor provides smaller riders with perfectly balanced, never top handling with a low centre of gravity.

  • The rear hub has no influence on the bike's behaviour when changing gears - in comparison a mid drive makes changing gears under load more difficult, not what a junior e-biker wants.
Control Panel
Control Panel v1

With a clear, simple design which is easy to understand and use regardless of age, the Ben-e-Bike control panel found on the TWENTY and TWENTYSIX models is tried, tested and a delight to use.

  • The clear display with its three push buttons controls the degree of power assistance, as well as switching the bike on and off.

  • The maximum support speed can be individually adjusted by the parents. Support speed is adjustable between 6 - 15 mph (for technical reasons the maximum support speed is limited to 20 km / h when using the standard 175 Wh battery).

  • Option to adjust the maximum motor power in the setup menu, allowing the parent to provide suitable output according to the rider's weight.

  • Pushing aid (3.5 mph)

  • 0.6 volt output for optional fitting of front and rear lights.

BEB Battery

How long does the battery last?

This is probably the most frequently asked question we have ever heard about Ben E-bikes.
And at the same time it is the question that is most difficult to answer.
Because the battery life depends on so many factors that it is simply impossible to make a universally valid statement.

The following factors significantly influence the range:

Weight of the rider – the difference between a 4 and 7 stone makes a big difference.

Which level of support is chosen? If your child uses only Level 1, then the 175 Wh battery can easily cover a distance of 35 to 45 miles. However, pedalling mainly with the assistance levels up at 3 – 5, you wouldn’t be surprised if the low battery display flashes after 15 to 20 miles of riding.

Also the terrain profile has a big impact – the steeper the climbs, the faster the battery empties. Of course, this is also due to the fact that a stronger support level is usually chosen while going up hill, but at level 3 on the flat the motor still needs less energy than on gradients of 5 – 10%.

The ambient temperature of the battery always comes into play – in cold conditions, the battery performance is noticeably reduced.

With all that in mind we tend to be sceptical about claims which are common with adult bikes, of ranges up to 90 miles or more.

When designing and specifying the range of Ben-e-Bikes, we asked, how much battery capacity does a children’s e-bike need? The fact that our competitors rely on heavy versions with 400 Wh shows that they simply grasp the shelves of existing components. What should be sufficient for adults with about 100 kg system weight (driver and bike) for 60 – 150 km range, would have to be enough for children’s e-bikes for at least twice the range. Does that really make sense?

Our experience shows that in most cases our 175 Wh battery provides more than enough capacity for long day trips. But the battery weighs only 970 g and not 2.5 -3.0 kg as in the competition! Anyone who still has concerns about the range, we offer two options:

  • If you are concerned about ending up out on the trail with an empty battery, we recommend the “Twin Power Option” as an ideal solution. You buy the Ben e-bike with a second battery and double your range. With a weight of just 970 g and compact dimensions (200 mm length, 63 mm diameter), the additional battery is easily transported in a parent’s backpack.
  • A larger version with 250 Wh capacity (additional weight 360 g).

Battery Technical Data:

  • 175 Wh capacity (optional 250 Wh) with the latest Panasonic NCR18650GA cells
  • Range 25 – 40 miles with 35 kg rider weight

Components

BEB 24

If you look at the specifications of the BEN-E-BIKEs, you will often find the abbreviation “BEB” for the components used.

Quite simply – these are all parts that are either made specifically for BEN-E-BIKE (BEB) according to their own, child-friendly specifications.

We know very well that quality conscious buyers like to rely on well known manufacturers – however, these only rarely offer components that are really suitable for use in children’s bicycles. And that’s why we never tire of optimising every little detail of our bikes to meet the needs of the younger generation.

Suspension forks used on children’s bikes are all too often considered “expendable”. Unfortunately, this cost cutting exercise is confirmed by miserable performance. Many suspension forks look good, but significantly increase the overall weight of the bike without really improving ride comfort, because in most cases neither spring rate nor damping (if any) are adapted to the low rider weight.

The SMOOTHER PRO suspension fork, which has been specially adapted by Spinner for BEN-E-BIKE, shows that things can be done differently.

  • Ideally adapted to the weight of the rider by air pressure
  • Damping optimised for use in children’s bikes, adjustable in the pressure and rebound stage (including Lock Out)
  • 100mm usable travel, a uniquely long-stroke in the kid’s E-Bike market
  • Weight of only 1,590g – especially light despite sturdy 32mm stanchions!

BEB 24 Fork

Seemingly only a detail, but of enormous importance – BEN-E-BIKE pedals are small, CNC-milled works of art.

Specifically designed for us, with especially short titanium axles , they allow a lower Q-factor and also reduce the risk of slipping when pedalling standing up. The replaceable pins ensure a secure hold of the feet at all times, even in wet conditions. The risk of injury from the pins is minimal – during all tests within the two-year development phase there was not a single scratch on the legs of our little test riders!

  • Especially short titanium axles for low Q-factor
  • 3-fold, sealed industrial bearings for maximum longevity
  • Interchangeable screw pins
  • Weight – 174g per pair

BEB Pedal

Our handlebars have a width of 560 mm for the TWENTY, 600 mm for the TWENTYFOUR and 640 mm for the TWENTYSIX for optimum handling.

The handlebar itself is extremely stable yet uniquely lightweight thanks to the carbon construction.

  • Full carbon handlebar
  • 31.8 mm clamping
  • Weight – 100g / 130g

BEB Bars

So that the wide handlebars do not lead to ‘long arms’, the stem has a length of only 40mm. In addition, its weight is an unrivalled 89g, without any compromise in stability.

  • 31.8 mm handlebar clamp, 1 1/8 ” shaft clamp
  • Angle: 7 °
  • Weight – 89 g

BEB Stem

Steering precision requires exact guidance of the fork – and that’s why all of the BEN-E-BIKE head sets are equipped with sealed industrial bearings that guarantee maximum longevity.

  • Bearings made of forged, CNC-turned aluminium Al6063 / T6
  • Angled Contact Bearing (ACB), fully sealed
  • Weight – 84 g

BEB Headset

The bespoke saddle, made of a special nylon material, has in many tests been rated superior in terms of comfort to conventional padded children’s saddles. In the case of an accidental hard impact for the child on the saddle, the structure of the surface allows a much greater flexibility.

  • Cool ‘spider’ design and maximum seating comfort thanks to the wide, flexible seat, which also absorbs no moisture when the bike is in the rain
  • Titanium rails
  • Weight – 134 g

BEB Saddle

Too good to hide in the frame, the BEB seatpost is a quality item which many a parent would be proud to ride!

  • 27.2 mm diameter, CNC-turned aluminium Al6061, surface anodised
  • Precisely adjustable in inclination via stainless steel screws
  • Weight – 169 g

BEB Seatpost

Why are the BEN-E-BIKEs so light? Because we also use the ‘best of the best’ in the places where you wouldn’t expect on a children’s bike. The spindle of the front quick release is not made of steel but of a high-strength titanium alloy.

  • Spindle made of a titanium alloy TC4, anodized aluminum lever Al6063
  • Weight – 24 g

BEB QR

Even if we have many parts made to our own specification, there are components that we just can not do better. The front hub of PLP is a prime example of this – especially light and thanks to sealed bearings designed for maximum longevity.

  • Sealed industrial ball bearings
  • Weight – 133 g
